Nero 6 review

SoundTrax, on the other hand, lets you splice together audio files, and then listen to effects, EQ and volume changes applied in real time and non-destructively; real changes aren't applied until you save the resulting file. We did inform Ahead Software of the problem, but only professionals who would probably prefer a higher-end editor anyway are likely to encounter it. If audio is your thing, only professional-level programs offer more functionality. Think that's plenty of tools?

Think again. InfoTool is actually a holdover and free download from the company's Web site. The program tells you all sorts of things about both your drive and media, such as whether it supports Mount Rainier, disc capacity and speed rating, and so on; it's very handy for CD and burner testing. The only thing missing from Nero 6 Ultra that's included in Easy CD Creator 6 is a dedicated photo-editing application; but Nero Vision Express 2 includes numerous photo-editing tools for preparing images for slide shows.

The software itself includes concise, informative Windows tool tips for virtually every button and function in every module in the suite and even for the Start Menu entries. The online help at the company's Web site includes FAQs, email to a technical support agent and downloadable software updates. Unfortunately, though, it lacks a search function, and Nero 6 Ultra Edition-specific support wasn't available online at the time of this writing.

Most importantly, Ahead is amazingly responsive to users who write in with bugs or other problems. The company posts regular free updates, fixes bugs promptly, and even offers a complete listing of fixes and features dating back to the earliest versions of the program. Because of the heavy processing going on, especially the MPEG encoding, Ahead recommends at least a 1.

Crash and Burn We did experience a couple of crashes during our tests, for various reasons. Only one of them happened during an actual burn. We did find that a couple of our crashes were repeatable.

Technology Leader Certainly the best news with this new version, from our perspective, is that there is no more nonsense with the installation process. The technical tools and utilities are impressive and easy to use. Although the repeatable crashes are disturbing from a quality control point of view, at least the program did not crash in a random manner.

The distinction is important: Nero 6 was very stable. This review really only touches on a few selected aspects of an outstanding program that continues to undergo an informal review here in our labs.

Sign in Join. Sign in. Forgot your password? Nero 6. While both are easy to use and highly capable, they force you through a step-by-step process, which could annoy or frustrate savvy users.

We're also still waiting for the single-pane, tunneling browser and disc layout windows in Nero Burning ROM that we put on our wish list in our review of Nero 5. At the heart of the Nero 6. In this new incarnation, Nero Burning ROM gets a mild face-lift with larger icons, more comprehensive pop-up tool tips, and other tweaks; Nero Express remains the easy-to-use program it has always been; and InCD 4.

All three are stable, mature programs and remain our favorites. On top of the old standbys, Nero 6. Both are extremely powerful, considering that they're just parts of an inexpensive software suite. Nero Vision Express 2. The program supports motion menu buttons small snippets of movies that play within the scene-selection button , and even the background of your menu screen can be a movie. Like other apps in the suite, however, Vision Express relies solely on a step-by-step, wizard-style interface, which quickly becomes tedious and constricting when you've learned what you're doing.

For example, you can't preview your creation except by advancing screen by screen to the preview pane. You'll need some additional hardware and software to make use of that last function, but to even see it on a piece of Windows-compatible software is a first for me.

The bottom of the interface gives you a graphical representation of how much storage your data is taking up on the disc. There's no real magic to this application - it simply works. I have a system set up to automatically back up my files each week. The system works well and has a Wizard interface to help you get started.

It will handle just about any task, save copying copy-protected DVDs - something that won't happen anytime soon save for offshore freeware and shareware applications. Nero 6 Ultra Edition gives you just about everything you need to handle home digital media projects. I found it to be robust, easy to use and a great solution for getting all kinds of media to DVD and CD quickly and efficiently.

Since its inception in , Ahead's leading application, Nero, has built a loyal customer base of more than million users world-wide. The scoring below is based on each piece of equipment doing the duty it is designed for. The numbers are weighed heavily with respect to the individual cost of each unit, thus giving a rating roughly equal to:.
